A four-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh has gone straight into class 9 at a Lucknow school after she was formally cleared as a prodigy by the state’s education and school departments.
Ananya Verma’s extraordinary abilities appear to run in the family. Last year, her 15-year-old sister Sushma became the youngest PhD scholar at BBAU. In 2007, Sushma had been recognised by the Limca Book of Records as the youngest student to clear class X at the age of seven. Their brother, Shailendra, finished high school at the age of nine and completed the BCA when he was 14.
So if Ananya clears the class 10 board exams next year, she will break her sister’s record.
The three prodigies come from a family in which the mother is illiterate and the father is an assistant supervisor of sanitation at a university. But Ananya speaks fluent English and reads newspapers like an adult.
According to a Deccan Chronicle report, Ananya’s talent wasn’t discovered until a school teacher from St Meera’s Inter College (the same school where the two older children had studied) met her father, Tej Bahadur Verma, at a local market. While the two were talking, Ananya was casually reading one of her books. This caught the teacher’s attention and he organised a series of tests for the child. When she cleared them, Ananya was admitted to class 9.
The school manager Vinod Ratra said, “Ananya is even more talented than her siblings. We will ensure that Ananya gets free education in our institution.”
