• Anaarkali of Araah: Inspiring Story Of A Small Town Singer

Bollywood has finally taken up the onus of addressing women-centric issues in mainstream cinema. After ‘Pink’ shook the entire country with its message of promoting women’s safety, Bollywood is back with another movie Anaarkali of Aarah directed by Avinash Das addressing similar issues.

Starring Swara Bhaskar, the movie is about a small-town singer who sings and dances to fend for herself. Her life, however, takes a drastic turn when she decides to wage a war with a powerful rich man who had touched her inappropriately at an event.

The recently released trailer of the movie shows how difficult it is for a small-town girl to seek justice. Besides the police authorities turning her away, her friend is also shown doubting her capabilities to avenge the injustice done to her. She, on the contrary, is determined to teach the culprit a lesson.

Swara seems to have worked really hard on her diction and accent to bring that regional touch in her speech.

Talking about her character in the film, Swara told TOI, ”Anaarkali of Aarah is a very special film for me. Not just because it’s a relevant and topical film on an important issue but because I have never been as closely associated with the pre-production and making of any film as I have been with Anaarkali. Even when Avinash ji had simply
narrated the idea to me, I was sold. I have read every single draft he has written and I feel like I grew with the script. I’ve never worked so hard on any film as I have on Anaarkali, I injured myself, fell sick, had a breakdown, everything, while filming and yet strangely I never lost faith in this project. I think we have made a very courageous film that deserves to be widely seen.”

Will the small-town girl be able to fight for her rights? Will truth win over
misogyny? For these answers to unfold, you will have to wait till March
24, for the movie to hit the theatres.
