• 21 Women police stations opened in Haryana on Rakshabandhan

In a big leap taken by the Haryana government for women empowerment, police stations specifically for women are being built. Not just that, they will also be run by women to avoid any kind of difficulties. The women police stations were much needed especially in Haryana where a lot of crimes like rape, molestation, sexual abuse etc. against women happen on a daily basis.

In total 21 police stations were opened at once in all the districts like Sirsa, Bhiwani, Panchkula, Gurgaon, Sonepat, Kurukshetra etc today. The police station will add greatly to the development of the cities and help in reducing crime against women, according to the Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh.

The police station is expected to be an avenue for many initiatives related to women empowerment. The Police Commissioner of Gurgaon district, Navdeep Singh Virk, has high hopes from these police stations.

“This will not be a police station alone but it houses many facilities for empowerment of women like operation of women helpline 1091, setting up of Protection Officer’s office for solving cases of domestic violence, Legal Aid Clinic for providing legal help and counselling to the women etc,” said the Police Commissioner in a report by Ibnlive.

These police stations act as a welcoming change that will make women feel more secure in the state. “Women’s police stations will also be opened in small towns and cities of the state depending on the success of the initiative. The concept has brought Haryana on the world map. BBC News has covered the event,” asserted Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar as quoted in The Tribune.

The women have been trained to take up positions in these police stations and they have been legally empowered to execute orders under the Criminal Procedure Code, according to the Director General of Police Y P Singhal.

It is a ground-breaking step by the Haryana government since Haryana has always been considered a state where inequality against women has been going on for a long time now. This move definitely shouts out to the liberal attitude that the Haryana government is embracing towards its female citizen.  It is a one stop shop that empowers, educates, inspires and empathizes with women. A win-win for everyone!
