As technology takes over, jobs that once required manually intervention are disappearing, some jobs are seeking a decline and others have disappeared completely. We bring you a list of jobs that were once in high demand but now are not needed anymore:

 BOWLING ALLEY PINSETTER

Before the machines took over, it was a manual job to arrange the bowling pins in the correct position. Pinsetters were also responsible for bringing back the balls for the players.

HUMAN ALARM CLOCK

Until the early 1920s when alarm clocks were still not reliable, people were actually employed to go door to door in the morning to knock or ring a bell to wake people up.

ICE CUTTERS

Before the advent of modern refrigeration techniques, ice cutters were responsible for cutting the ice from frozen lakes and ponds and supply it to people. It involved working in extreme temperatures.

LEECH COLLECTORS

Leeches were needed for medical use back in the day, for bloodletting and for therapeutic purposes. Leech collectors had one of the dirtiest jobs that involved going through swamps, to collect leeches.

LISTENERS FOR ENEMY AIRCRAFT

Before the invention of radar, people were employed to keep a watch at enemy aircraft by using acoustic mirrors and listening devices.

NEWSPAPER READERS/STORYTELLERS

Factories and workplaces use to employ newspaper readers or storytellers for the entertainment of their employees, before advanced and more entertaining alternatives were available.

RESURRECTIONIST

They were employed by medical universities, to snatch dead bodies from graves to use as cadavers. This was practised when a corpse wasn't easily available in a legal way.

STREET LIGHTER

Before the electricity took over the roads and street lights that run automatically were installed, there were people employed whose jobs were to go on the street at night and light up each lightpost manually (by fire), that’s not it, in the morning the person also had to put the lamps off.

SWITCHBOARD OPERATORS

Calling is a simple operation now, but back when this facility was first introduced it was a complex action which required switchboard operators to connect the call.

TOWN CRIER

Before the news portals and text alert, important announcements of the states were made by gentlemen roaming around in town, speaking in loud volumes and spreading the message.
