The bereaved parents of a young woman, who passed away after allegedly receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, are set to initiate legal action against the company. This decision comes in the wake of disconcerting revelations and a growing chorus of concerns regarding the safety profile of the Covishield vaccine, manufactured by an Indian pharmaceutical giant in collaboration with AstraZeneca.

The Case At Hand

The tragic death of Karunya, daughter of Venugopalan Govindan, allegedly following her Covishield vaccination in July 2021, has brought to the forefront the debate surrounding vaccine safety. Despite the establishment of a national committee by the government to investigate such incidents, conclusive evidence linking her demise to the vaccine remains elusive.

Venugopalan Govindan, who lost his daughter Karunya, is upset with AstraZeneca's late acknowledgment of the situation, calling it "too late", as more people suffer, especially after 15 European countries took action due to reports of blood clot-related deaths just a few months after the vaccine was launched. He expressed deep disappointment in a conversation with The Economic Times, saying: "AstraZeneca and SII should have stopped the manufacture and supply of these vaccines when 15 European countries either suspended or age-limited them due to deaths from blood clots that happened in March 2021, within a couple of months of the rollout of the vaccine itself."

The parents have filed a legal petition asking for an independent medical team to investigate their daughter's death. However, when asked for comment, the Serum Institute declined to speak on the matter.

AstraZeneca's Acknowledgment

AstraZeneca has admitted in legal documents that Covishield can, in rare cases, cause Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS). Despite this, a senior member of a national COVID working group has reassured people, saying that the vaccine has been mostly safe in India, where it has been used to vaccinate 90% of the population. But despite these efforts to ease fears, many families still suffer, feeling that their concerns aren't fully heard.

Expressing his frustration, Govindan argues that both drug companies and governments allegedly promoted COVID-19 vaccines as "safe and effective" without enough proof. He blames regulatory bodies for not acting sooner, even when there were signs of possible risks with the vaccine.

Govindan solemnly avows, "The regulatory bodies that approved it and subsequently didn't intervene to stop it when data emerged about the dangers are all culpable in the death of my daughter and countless others who have died after taking this so-called vaccine. If sufficient remedies aren't obtained, for the sake of justice and to prevent the recurrence of this atrocity that was perpetrated in the name of public health, we will file fresh cases against any and all of those perpetrators because of whose actions the deaths of our children ensued."
